UV Water Treatment

WHAT IS UV LIGHT?

For the past 100 years science has recognised the bacterial effects of ultra-violet light.UV light is the section of the spectrum with a wavelength shorter than visible light and is divided into UVA, UVB and UVC.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

UVB and UVC light emitted by medium pressure UV lamps, at wavelengths between 200-315nm, induce changes to the DNA of bacteria and RNA of viruses.

If the damage to the DNA/RNA is sufficient, that is the UV dose is sufficiently high, the repair mechanism will be overwhelmed and the micro-organism will die.

Unlike halogen based disinfectants, UV can inactivate protoza such as Cryptosporidium, Pseudamonous, Legionella and many other Bacteria.

WHY INSTALL A UV DISINFECTION UNIT?

UV offers all the benefits and more of ozone at a fraction of the capital and running costs.

A UV unit can be easily retrofitted to an existing pool/spa treatment system.

Using UV as the primary disinfectant results in lower combined chlorine levels, typically reduced by up to 90%.

UV treatment produces crystal clear waters and a more pleasant environment for the both bathers and poolside staff.

HOW DOES UV ACHIEVE THIS?

When pool waters are chlorinated the chlorine reacts with ammonia and organics in the water and produces by-products such as chloramines and THM`s including chloroform.

Chloromines are associated with the problem of odours and "red-eye" and chloroform is a known carcinogen.

UV breaks down chloramines and oxidises many of the organics in the water, reducing the combined chlorine and THM formation potential, producing a more stable free chlorine residual.
